The Grey Lady
Did you know “Nantucket” is a Native American term that means “Far Away Land"? Do you know why Nantucket is also known as “The Grey Lady”? Some say it's because of the HDC (Historic District Commission) requiring strict usage of shingles on the exterior of buildings. The shingles turn grey over time. Some say Nantucket is known as The Grey Lady because of the fog that can roll in anytime, anywhere on the island. We say its a combination of the two aspects that give the island her personality that allows all the surrounding natural beauty to shine!
Regardless of the term “Grey Lady” you can rest assured that you will be sun-kissed most of the time on Nantucket, and you can always count on a sea breeze! Our beaches are some of the most stunning places in the world according to National Geographic 2016. The North West shore is great for families and calm water swimmers, whereas the North East shore is great for fishing. The South Shore is where you will find wind and waves, surfers delight. West shore is the place to be for sunsets and you may see signs of a whale the East shore.
Nantucket is also known for its historic downtown district where you will find the best of the best in restaurants, art galleries, theaters, and unique shops.
